Synopsis
Recitatif is Toni Morrison's only short fiction, originally published in 1983 and reissued in 2022. The story of Twyla and Roberta, two women who met as girls in an orphanage, explores race, memory and friendship across decades. Morrison wrote the story so that it is impossible to determine the race of the protagonists.
